DED in Nepal .

The German Development Service in Nepal

The governments of Nepal and Germany signed an Agreement on development co-operation on July 1st, 1968, marking the official beginning of DED activities in Nepal. Since then DED has assigned competent, experienced and socially committed professionals to development projects and programmes. Furthermore, DED supports local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Self-Help Initiatives (SHI) by providing advice and limited funds for projects and small programmes as well as supporting local professionals.

The majority of DED partner countries are in transition to democracy, just like Nepal. Establishing democracy is a long process, which involves setbacks and power struggles. At the local level in particular, large sectors of the population are often unaware or unable to understand what rights and duties they have as a member of the local community. This means that citizens are not able to exercise their right to get informed from local and municipal agencies and municipal structures themselves are inadequately and rarely in a position to make full use of their new scope of action.

The target group of the DED involvement cover all citizens - without discrimination by gender, ethnicity, age, education, occupation, language etc. - who have to be included on order to achieve local democracy.

Since 2000, the DED-Nepal supports the development of local democracy in the priority areas

  • Local Government
  • Civil Society
  • Rural Development

corresponding to one of the German-Nepal agreed main intervention areas, namely the "Strengthening of Local Self-Governance and Civil Society".
