What is DED?
DED stands for "Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst" or German Development Service. It is one of the leading European development services for personnel cooperation. It was founded in 1963. Since then more than 16 000 development experts have committed themselves to improving the living conditions of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Almost 2000 international and national technical assistants are currently working in 47 countries.
What are the activities of DED in Nepal?
Close to the people, cooperation among partners – these have been the principles of DED since 1968, the official start of DED operations in Nepal. Rural Development, Local Governance and Support for the Civil Society are currently the main intervention areas.
Where is the budget coming from?
DED is a non-profit-making, limited liability company owned jointly by the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, and "Learning and Helping Overseas", a registered association. DED is financed by the German federal budget.
Does DED finance projects and organizations?
DED is primarily sending qualified, experienced personnel to developing countries. There are, however, small-scale support projects for non-governmental organizations working for gender equity. If you are interested in the Democracy Promotion Program, please contact the country office.
When did DED start its programme in Nepal?
In 1968, representatives of the Nepalese and the German governments signed an agreement - the official start of DED co-operation with its Nepalese counterparts. Until today, more than 400 technical assistants from DED have contributed to various development programmes in Nepal.
Does DED cooperate with other organizations?
DED Nepal cooperates with: Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer technische Zusammenarbeit – German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and KfW Development Bank as well as with a number of Nepalese organizations.
Is DED offering jobs?
To fulfil its task, DED needs the commitment of professionally experienced and socially committed technical assistants from around the world. Employment as a Development Expert is normally based on a two year contract. The Junior Advisor Programme offers young people the opportunity of entering the field of development co-operation. Junior Advisors work on one year contracts.

The DED job market gives you the opportunity to search for a suitable project placement according to your profession, working area, region/country and language. Only applications for specific positions will be considered. We expect applicants to have a basic knowledge of German.
Can I apply for a job at DED Nepal directly?
In general, this is not possible. You have to send your application directly to the headquarters of DED, Bonn, Germany.
Are there internships?
DED Nepal offers no internships. There is, however, the possibility to apply for the “weltwaerts” volunteer programme. If you are between 18 and 23 years old and willing to learn and work for one year in a developing country please apply directly at DED.
